Cancun and the Riviera Maya are two destinations mixed up in one, or better said, one single destination with two different marketing brands. The truth is that there is just one airport for the two of them and the people visiting Cancun, ends going to the same attractions as the people going to Riviera Maya.
The question then asks itself: which are these attractions?
“La playa baby!” You can argue all you want about the spectacular natural beauty of the area, or its huge cultural appeal, but the reality is that if Cancun and Riviera Maya didn’t have those amazing beaches, they wouldn’t be the world-class tourist hotspot that it is today. You simply don’t find that kind of incredibly white sand anywhere else, and when you get to see the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea, then you know this place is paradise on Earth.
Yeah, you don’t go to Egypt and stay put at the hotel swimming pool. The Yucatan Peninsula where Cancun and Riviera Maya are located hosts several ancient Mayan cities. The most famous being Chichen Itza (one of the New Seven Wonders of the World), and Tulum, an impressive fortress right at the beach (awesome, right?)
There are quite a lot, but your time is precious and limited, so which ones are the can’t-miss type? Xcaret, Xel-Há and Xplor, are the largest, most impressive eco-parks in the region. Each one has a different style, so you won’t be doing the same stuff every time, and you can get a special price if you get the package for the three parks.
Three amazingly beautiful islands surround these twin destinations. The largest one is Cozumel, which is also a small city with its own flavour. Then you have to visit Isla Mujeres and do some snorkeling on its crystal clear waters. Finally, Holbox is the tiniest and more intimate one, there are no cars in here but golf carts. Isn’t that cute?
You could make a point about the importance of visiting the nearby towns, like Playa del Carmen, or making the most of the extraordinary shopping options in the area too. However, when choosing the can’t-miss things to do in Cancun & Riviera Maya, the beach, the pyramids, the eco-parks and the islands, get our vote.
